Manchester United has triggered a one-year extension in Erik ten Hag’s contract, ensuring his stay at the club until 2026.
The Dutchman, who joined from Ajax in 2022, had initially signed a deal set to expire in 2025 and has already secured two trophies during his tenure at Old Trafford.
“I am very pleased to have reached agreement with the club to continue working together,” said the 54-year-old.
“Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined.”
Ten Hag emphasized that “there is still lots of hard work ahead.”
During his first season at Manchester United, Ten Hag guided the team to a third-place finish in the Premier League and ended a six-year trophy drought with a Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle.
However, the second season proved more challenging, with United finishing eighth in the Premier League and exiting the Champions League group stages. A crucial 2-1 win against Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May played a significant role in Ten Hag retaining his position.
Following a review of the team’s performance led by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, discussions with potential replacements for Ten Hag took place. Ultimately, it was decided that Ten Hag deserved to stay, with plans to work under an improved club structure.
Ratcliffe has revamped United’s board structure since acquiring a 27.7% stake in the club, appointing Jason Wilcox, Omar Berrada, Sir Dave Brailsford, and Dan Ashworth to key senior positions.
“With our strengthened football leadership team now in place, we are looking forward to working hand-in-hand with Erik to achieve our shared ambitions for this football club,” commented sporting director Ashworth.
United is currently in discussions with Ten Hag regarding restructuring his backroom staff. Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who managed PSV Eindhoven from 2022 to 2023, is expected to return to Old Trafford as part of an enhanced coaching setup alongside Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake.
