Kind-hearted Kenyans have generously praised and rewarded Jonathan Mutua Muoka for his courageous act.
The Finance Bill protests took place on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. During these protests, a security guard was reportedly locked outside a Safaricom shop while telco staff sought safety inside.
Speaking to UPEPO.co.ke, the security officer at a Safaricom shop in Nairobi humbly recounted his actions during the chaotic demonstrations.
“I was performing my duty by locking my colleagues inside while I remained outside,” he explained. “With the shop secured by a metallic mesh, I had no choice but to stay outside and watch over the business and the precious lives inside for seven hours. My only protective gear was a surgical mask.”
“It was my duty, and despite fearing for my life, I had to be courageous and firm not to leave the premises like my colleagues did,” he narrated. “It was a chilling experience, hearing the shooting and being teargassed, but I never wavered. I stayed put until the colleagues left.”
I cannot express my gratitude,” Jonathan Mutua said. A video of Mutua guarding the business outside his work area went viral, sparking mixed reactions among Kenyans.
However, Mutua’s bravery touched the hearts of many social media users who praised him. They acknowledged his courage in not running away and applauded him, sending him cash gifts as a token of appreciation.
“Many people called me and gave me encouraging words. Others sent me money, and so far I have received KSh 30,000. I cannot express my gratitude, but I was doing my job—guarding what I had been entrusted with: the lives of my colleagues. I can only say it is God who protected me and even touched Kenyans to show their appreciation through financial support,” he said.
