Yesterday, July 2, 2024, youths flooded the streets of Nairobi in ongoing demonstrations to express solidarity for slain Kenyans, a movement underscored by widely shared posters.
Among the demonstrators were individuals labeled as “goons” who engaged in acts of mayhem, including the destruction and theft of property from multiple businesses.
During the recent protests in Nairobi, several shop owners reportedly armed themselves to prevent looting amid demonstrations honoring slain Kenyans, as depicted in widely circulated posters.
Among the peaceful protestors, a young woman broke away from the crowd upon noticing a troubling development. Gripping a rungu while walking along Moi Avenue, she paused her march to voice her concerns to a Kenyan who later shared the video online.
“My name is Immaculate. Initially, I joined fellow youth in peaceful protest today,” she began.
“But things have changed. Do you want to know why?” she asked rhetorically.
“The goons have been unleashed everywhere!” she exclaimed passionately.
“They’re stealing from people, snatching phones. Our mission now is to handle them first, then resume our protest,” she asserted firmly.
“We’re here to safeguard people’s shops. There are goons who’ve been sent,” she continued, referencing a recent video.
In her impassioned plea, Immaculate highlighted the dual objectives of protecting businesses and maintaining the integrity of the protest amidst escalating tensions.
Netizens reacted strongly to the events unfolding during the Nairobi protests. Many expressed solidarity with the peaceful demonstrators while condemning the actions of the alleged goons who were causing chaos and looting.
Some shared videos and photos depicting the unrest, urging authorities to intervene and restore order. Discussions online also centered around the need for peaceful protests and the consequences of violence on communities and businesses.
Overall, the reactions underscored a mix of concern, frustration, and calls for justice amidst the turbulent situation on the streets of Nairobi.
