A senior police officer tragically passed away after accidentally shooting himself while in the process of handing over his firearm.
Kegonga Police Station in Kuria East, Migori county is mourning the loss of a senior police officer following his passing.
On Monday evening, July 1, Kuria East OCPD James Mugo accidentally shot himself in the right thigh while carrying out safety precautions within the station, as reported in a police statement witnessed by UPEPO.co.ke.
“A report was made by an officer NO 228594 CPL Caudence Nyangenya the charge lines and armoury that while issuing a Barreta pistol to a junior officer and while carrying out safety precautions the senior officer accidentally shot himself injuring his right leg thigh exiting on the right bottom,” the police report read in part.
The officer is reported to have discharged one round from a 9mm Beretta pistol.
Kuria East OCPD James Mugo hospitalised
Mugo was rushed to Kegonga Sub-county Hospital and later transferred to Migori County Hospital in critical condition due to severe bleeding. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on arrival at Migori County Hospital. His body is currently preserved at the hospital awaiting autopsy.
“The officer was rushed to Kegonga Sub County Hospital and later referred to Migori County Hospital for further treatment in serious condition. On arrival, he was pronounced dead due to excessive bleeding. The body is preserved at the same hospital morgue awaiting autopsy,” added the statement.

In another incident, a senior Nairobi police officer was hospitalized after reportedly ingesting poison at his Rongai residence. His wife recounted that the officer returned home visibly distressed, informing her of the loss of his firearm loaded with 15 bullets. He was promptly rushed to the hospital, while fellow officers initiated an investigation to locate the missing gun.
