Does Kenya have free Wi-Fi?
President Ruto remarked that Kenyans are using the government-provided free Wi-Fi for “kutusalimia” (to greet us). In response, Safaricom user @NewtonJoseph7 tweeted, “President Ruto: Kenyans are using government-provided free Wi-Fi ‘kutusalimia’. Safaricom PLC, please tell me that I am the one paying for my monthly Wi-Fi and not the government. If they are covering it, let’s do the math and refund me, please.”
Safaricom took notice and replied, asking Joseph to share details of his internet issues by DMing them with his account number. “Hi Newton Joseph, please DM us here [link] with the challenge you are facing with your Home Fibre and include your account number,” Safaricom’s response read.
In his speech, Ruto explained that the free Wi-Fi, intended for positive use, had sometimes been used to send him messages. “When we delivered Wi-Fi across Kenya and made it free, we intended it for good purposes, but sometimes it is used to send us encouraging messages,” Ruto said. Meanwhile, many netizens criticized Ruto’s statement, arguing that the free Wi-Fi project is largely a myth and non-existent in many parts of the country.
Netizens, however, took issue with Ruto’s claim, arguing that the free Wi-Fi project is largely non-existent.
@capellosalim wrote, “Ruto believes Kenyans are using free government Wi-Fi to ‘kusalimia’ government officials, but where is this free Wi-Fi? Kenyans rely on mobile data and are actively demanding accountability from their leaders.”
@Swaleh_Amiir commented, “Former CS Eliud Owalo lied to the president about the availability of free Wi-Fi across the country.”
@tweetbyJuma asked, “Which side of Kenya are you using that free Wi-Fi from Ruto?”
