A Kenyan preacher has addressed the public after being mistakenly listed as a wanted suspect by the DCI.
The DCI issued a public notice seeking assistance in identifying suspects wanted for their involvement in unlawful activities during the anti-finance bill 2024 demonstrations.
They instructed individuals with information to report to the nearest police station for necessary actions.
One of the images circulating online included Pastor Dennis Basweti, identified from a TikTok video where he was seen speaking into a microphone in parliament.
The investigators mistakenly identified Basweti as one of the demonstrators who unlawfully entered parliament. Speaking to UPEPO.co.ke, Basweti clarified that he was in parliament on Monday, June 10, upon invitation by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro.
“He was actually the one recording the video,” Basweti explained. He mentioned that he voluntarily visited the DCI offices in Kisii. “When I showed the officers the video, they found it amusing,” he recounted.
Basweti added that the officers contacted their counterparts at parliament, and he anticipates traveling to Nairobi to clarify the misunderstanding.
“I’m disappointed because the DCI should have conducted thorough investigations before circulating my image,” he expressed. However, Basweti clarified that he does not intend to pursue legal action regarding the incident.
In other news, the police have announced their intention to pursue the rowdy youths who were caught on camera stealing from businesses during the demonstrations.
They have released footage showing the suspects breaking into cars and business premises, resulting in significant losses to the owners.
One video clip depicted the violent youths ambushing a man on the roadside and forcibly robbing him of his belongings.
