In the lead-up to the peaceful march on Tuesday, June 18, against the proposed Finance Bill 2024, Kenyans reached out to politicians, encouraging them to reject the bill when it comes up for debate in the House. Among those contacted was MP Millie Odhiambo, who shared some of the peculiar messages she received in her DMs.
During a discussion centered on protecting teenage girls from predators, Millie Odhiambo stressed the importance of upholding high standards for child safeguarding. She fervently stated:
“We have raised standards in protecting our children, and we cannot talk about lowering the age because of men’s libido.”
Her comments highlight her steadfast dedication to child protection and her firm stance against any proposals that might jeopardize the safety and well-being of young girls.
During her discussion on empowering victims, Millie Odhiambo humorously mentioned an unexpected message from a young man amid the serious debate on the Finance Bill.
“Madam Speaker, while many people are writing to me saying, ‘Make sure the Finance Bill does not pass,’ one young man wrote, ‘I am young but I have inches, Madam Speaker.’”
In a news broadcast aired on Citizen TV, Millie expressed her amusement at the message.
“It’s the reverse; it’s the young men who are seeking out retirees like me. I don’t mean I’ve retired from my work, but I’ve retired from that other sector. Telling me about inches—what am I supposed to do with inches?”
Holding up documents referencing a criminal appeal case, Millie emphasized the importance of protecting both young girls and boys from exploitation.
“For those cases, we must ensure our young boys are protected from older individuals who might try to exploit them by offering money,” she stated.
Millie concluded by saying she would support the bill but would advocate for necessary amendments.
