Tanzanian gospel music circles were recently abuzz with rumors claiming that Bonny Mwaitege, the acclaimed singer behind hits like ‘Mke Mwema’, had tragically perished in a serious car accident. These false reports swiftly spread across social media, alarming fans and fellow artists alike. However, the truth emerged when Mwaitege’s wife stepped forward to dispel the baseless rumors, affirming that her husband was alive and in good health.
In an interview with Millard Ayo, Mwaitege’s wife reassured concerned followers, stating, “Bonny Mwaitege is perfectly fine. He recently returned safely from a trip to Kenya and is now resting at home.” Her statement quelled fears and provided relief to many who had been mourning the alleged loss.
Support for Mwaitege poured in from fellow musicians as well. Stephen Kasolo, a renowned Kamba singer, took to social media to denounce the spreading of false information about Mwaitege’s death. He urged people to refrain from sharing unsubstantiated news and instead focus on offering prayers and support to Mwaitege and other artists.
Similarly, Tanzanian gospel singer Christopher Mwahangila echoed these sentiments, labeling the rumors as malicious and urging the public to verify information before spreading it further.
The fabricated reports had initially claimed that Mwaitege had been involved in a fatal accident shortly after leaving a gospel concert. These rumors, fueled by social media chatter, quickly gained traction before being debunked by reliable sources.
Bonny Mwaitege, known for his soul-stirring songs such as ‘Sisi Sote’, ‘Mama Ni Mama’, ‘Maisha Ni Foleni’, and ‘Utanitambuaje’, has carved out a respected career in the gospel music scene. Starting as a background vocalist and dancer in a Tanzanian music band, he later embarked on a successful solo career, capturing the hearts of many with his powerful vocals and uplifting lyrics.
As the gospel community celebrates Mwaitege’s continued presence and talent, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of misinformation in the age of social media. It underscores the importance of verifying news before sharing it widely, especially when it concerns sensitive matters such as the well-being of public figures.
