Comedian Eric Omondi was finally released from police custody Friday evening.
Omondi who is also an activist was detained earlier in the day during a protest outside Parliament buildings.
On social media, Kenyans criticized the arrest and urged security agencies to free him.
In a statement shared on her Instagram stories, Omondi’s wife Lynne Njihia confirmed his release, stating simply, “He’s free.” She did not provide further details.
Speaking to X, Omondi mentioned that he was en route to a comedy show at the Carnivore Restaurant, organized in memory of his late brother Fred Omondi, who was also a comedian.
“Tukutane Carnivore sasa!! I’m on my way to ‘One more Last laugh’ for Fred Omondi,” he announced.
In a video captured by the Star, Omondi was seen alongside several others dressed in red attire, participating in a protest. They marched on horseback, and as police officers approached, chants of “Power to the people” echoed in the background.
After being pulled from the back of a horse by officers, Omondi was detained.
On Thursday, Omondi posted on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing legislators who voted in favor of the controversial Finance Bill 2024. The bill passed the Second Reading stage with 204 MPs in favor and 115 opposed, a decision Omondi argued went against the wishes of Kenyans.
“When the representatives of the people are unable to represent the people, the people shall represent themselves! It will not be a walk in the park. If we lose they must lose,” he stated.
Comedians and friends gathered Friday night at the Carnivore Restaurant to honor Fred Omondi, who tragically died in a road accident on Kangundo Road early Saturday morning, June 15. According to police, the accident occurred around 6 am near the Caltex Petrol station on Kangundo Road, when a boda boda carrying Fred collided head-on with a speeding bus.
