Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Muthusi, who supported the contentious Finance Bill 2024, has become the latest MP to face the ire of angry constituents, being confronted and chased away from public events.
The lawmaker attended a funeral in his constituency, where tensions flared as irate residents directed their anger towards him. The dramatic incident was caught on video and quickly went viral on social media. Netizens continue to express their determination to de-platform any MP or political figure who did not support Kenyans protesting the Finance Bill 2024.
The video captures the MP seated in the front row, engaging in a heated altercation with a man seated a few meters away.
Things took a turn for the worse when a man approached from the opposite direction and grabbed the MP.
Many others joined in, resulting in what appeared to be a scuffle as the crowd quickly grew. The MP was then led away by a man holding onto him.
Ruto-allied MPs Face Backlash for Supporting Finance Bill 2024
Several lawmakers allied with President Ruto who supported the controversial Finance Bill 2024 have faced significant backlash. Many have since made a hasty retreat and apologized to Kenyans for not heeding their concerns.
Despite these apologies, the public remains furious at the MPs who ignored widespread calls to reject the bill. By going against the public interest and the needs of their constituents, most of these MPs dismissed all concerns.
This dismissal sparked widespread protests, leading to the loss of several lives and numerous injuries as police clashed with unarmed protesters during a week of bloodshed.
President William Ruto eventually conceded and declined to sign the Finance Bill 2024, though critics argued that his decision came too late in the process and at a significant cost, including deaths, property destruction, injuries, and damage to the country’s reputation.
Initially, Ruto had rallied MPs to pass the bill, ignoring mounting public opposition and calls to reject it.
MPs, on the other hand, dismissed the protests, with some claiming that photos shared online were doctored. Others alleged that the Gen Z protesters had no understanding of the bill’s content.
The unrelenting protesters eventually succeeded, leading many to question who the MPs were truly representing and why the opposition to the bill was ignored until after the deaths and injuries occurred.
