Nyeri Family Devastated as Man, His 4 Sons Are Imprisoned for 100 Years

A Nyeri family is reeling from shock after five of its members received a combined prison sentence totaling 100 years.

Sixty-year-old John Ritho Kihoi, the head of the family, was sentenced to prison alongside his three biological sons and a son-in-law. They were convicted of inflicting serious harm.

On Simon Kibe’s show Njera-Ini Citu (Our Prisons), the five family members, currently imprisoned in Nyeri’s King’ong’o prison, shared their account of the events that led to their convictions.

“I was at the bar with my son-in-law and had some money left from selling onions. A man there asked me to buy him a drink, and his wife made the same request, which I fulfilled,” Kihoi recounted.

He explained that the man became upset when he bought a drink for the man’s wife, leading to an argument that escalated into a physical altercation outside the bar.

“I recall him throwing a stone at me, but since we were all drunk, the details of that night are quite hazy,” he added.

100-year sentence

Kihoi recounted that the man’s wife attempted to contact him the following morning, but he told her to leave him alone due to the previous night’s conflict.

“A year after the incident, I was arrested. The complainant claimed that my sons and I had assaulted him that night, leading to our arrest. The court found us guilty and sentenced us to a total of 100 years in prison. Each of us will serve 20 years, with our release set for 2037,” he explained.

Kihoi firmly believes that his sons are innocent and had no part in the altercation.

“I tried to tell the court that my sons weren’t even there, but my plea was ignored,” he said with evident distress.

The five men are deeply anguished as their family is left without their protection and support. “I hope my wife remains strong and continues to care for our children,” one of Kihoi’s sons said tearfully.

In other news, a Kenyan man from Nyeri, Dominic Ngugi, has shared how a simple act of kindness led to his imprisonment for eight months.

Ngugi, who worked at Chieni Supermarket, has been serving a sentence at a prison in Nanyuki. He described how the ordeal has devastated his life and cost him dearly.

Ngugi’s troubles began when he offered to help a customer by carrying two jerry cans of cooking oil. What seemed like a small, generous gesture soon spiraled into a serious legal issue, ultimately resulting in his incarceration.
