A video of Jimi Wanjigi’s mother becoming emotional and crying following her son’s arrest has touched Kenyans online.
Wanjigi was apprehended on Monday, August 19, at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Milimani office after responding to a police summons.
The billionaire had gone there to record a statement regarding allegations that he was funding anti-government protests, but instead, he was arrested.
On Tuesday, August 20, Jimi Wanjigi appeared before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi to face charges related to the possession of unlicensed firearms.
During the court session, Magistrate Shitubi granted Wanjigi release on a personal bond of KSh 10 million. This bond allows him to remain free until September 12, when a further decision will be made regarding the charges against him.
Additionally, the magistrate instructed that Wanjigi’s passport be deposited with the court as a condition of his release, pending her ruling.
In court, Wanjigi was represented by a team of prominent lawyers, including Senior Counsel Paul Muite, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Willis Otieno.
The defense team requested a delay in entering a plea, arguing that their client’s rights had been infringed.
They contended that the police had ignored a court order issued by Justice Bahati Mwamuye, which had previously halted Wanjigi’s arrest and detention.
This claim was central to their argument for postponing the plea.
After his release, Wanjigi was warmly reunited with his family, including his mother, wife, son, and daughter.
In a deeply emotional moment captured on video, his mother was visibly moved and began to cry. Wanjigi’s wife comforted her during this touching scene.
Following this, Wanjigi gently took his mother’s hand, adding to the heartfelt nature of the reunion.
What happened when police broke into Wanjigi’s home?
The businessman’s wife and children have been a crucial support system for him during his conflicts with President William Ruto’s government.
On August 9, police conducted a raid on Wanjigi’s Muthaiga home, forcibly breaking down the door and dragging everyone from their beds in their search for the politician.
Wanjigi’s son, Maina, reported that about five officers assaulted him before extending their violence to his sister and mother.
The family was reportedly made to lie on the floor and was subjected to further aggression despite their compliance with police orders.
His daughter, Wambui, described the raid as a humiliating experience but emphasized that it only reinforced their resolve to stand by their father.
She expressed a profound sense of pride in being Wanjigi’s daughter, highlighting how the ordeal strengthened their familial bonds and commitment to supporting him.
